The demand for entry-level sedans is quite high in India as most hatchback buyers aspire to get into a three-box vehicle as soon as possible. The Fiat Linea Classic showcases an alluring design which is reminiscent of both the Alfa Romeo and Maserati alike. The exterior remains almost unchanged as the regular Linea and this is a blessing. It looks really beautiful with only the fog lamps and alloy wheels missing. The Linea Classic has a design template that makes it feel more expensive than it actually is. There is a huge satin silver grille with two huge dual barrel headlamps. The references to Maserati are very pronounced in this case. There is a huge Fiat logo on the radiator grille along with a thin chrome surround enveloping it.The Linea Classic gets 15 inch steel wheels with nicely sculpted wheel covers. The Linea Classic has huge proportions which are elegantly accentuated with strategically placed creases and muscular wheel arches which make the car look really classy to say the least.

It is well furbished with various aspects that offer convenience to the occupants and also make the cabin look appealing. Seats are very cushiony and are covered up with fabric in top end and have vinyl seats in all other trims. The internal cabin that is made of high quality scratch resistant plastic that adds to the sturdiness of this vehicle. Inside door handles are in black in base ones and silver in higher variants. Head restraints of its rear seats have adjustable facility. In the high-end trim, there is an internal roof lamp which also has a dimming effect to it. There is an instrument cluster that is embedded with a lot of notifications. List comprises of a tachometer, a digital clock, programmable speed limiter buzzer, real time mileage indicator, a trip calculator with range, mileage/ average speed and duration. There is a lamp in the trunk also which helps to keep things properly even in the dark.
An air-conditioning unit is offered to all the trims as a standard variant and is regulated manually. This unit also consists of a heater. AC vents are also well placed in order to distribute the temperature equally to all corners. Only the top end trim has been blessed with a music system with a radio tuner and also which has a support to CD and MP3 player. All the doors are integrated with power windows with a delay and auto up function. The outside rear view mirrors are to be adjusted manually. A hydraulic power steering is bestowed, which will reduce the effort of the driver to a great extent. An armrest is provided for the rear seat as well. A cable is present for opening the boot lid in base and mid-level trims, while the high end is offered with a electrically regulated tailgate open. In top end variant, there is a vanity mirror fitted to the c-passenger side sun-visor. Tilt adjustable facility that is provided for its steering wheel will allow the driver to change the arm position while driving.
Fiat Linea Classic Engine & Gearbox
The Fiat Linea Classic has the same 1.3 litre Multi-Jet diesel engine as the old Linea with a major difference. This now has fixed geometry turbo and power has been brought down to 75 PS from 90 PS. This makes for a 17% drop in power and this is quite apparent when the car is driven on the highways, particularly at lower gears and slower speeds. The high torque diesel motor does provide ample power at higher speeds. The petrol motor offers 88 PS and is decent enough to drive as well. The driving experience is marred by the spongy clutch and the somewhat sluggish transmission unit.

With regards to the braking mechanism of this sedan, front wheels are equipped with ventilated disc brakes whereas, the rear ones have a pair of standard drum brakes. It is further integrated with an anti-lock braking system with an electronic brake-force distribution. This will allow the driver to have stronger control over the vehicle over all kinds of roads. In case of suspension, the front axle has an independent wheel whereas, the rear axle is mated with a torsion beam type suspension. These axles are integrated with helical coil springs with double acting telescopic dampers along with a stabilizer bar. A hydraulic based power assisted steering is bestowed for much efficient handling along with tilt adjustment facility. About 5.4 meters of its minimum turning radius is very useful, particularly on narrow roads.

Now arrives the crucial question. Does the Fiat Linea Classic make for a compelling case in the C-segment? We certainly think so. Amongst a sea of me too sedans, the Linea Classic offers a genuine European feel with its tank like build quality, attractive exterior styling, excellent ride quality and most importantly bigger dimensions. While the regular Linea Active is priced Rs. 75,000/- more than the top spec Linea Classic Plus, the latter is more feature loaded making it good value for money. The Linea Classic isn’t as loaded as similarly priced Japanese compact sedans but it has a definite character and that’s what makes it worth considering. With Fiat now finding its foot with a wide number of dealerships and the company offering a class leading 3-years/1 lakh kms warranty, there is no reason why admiration isn’t guaranteed with the Linea Classic.
