The all new Baleno features Maruti’s ‘Liquid Flow’ design philosophy which is derived from ‘energetic mass of water in motion’ concept. What this means is that the car has curvy body and energetic styling cues. The new facelift doesn’t differentiate it much from the earlier model but it does host some visible changes. At the front, the car gets a new grille design which looks aggressive. The headlamps might not look different from the earlier model, but it now replaces the bi-xenon projector ones with the new LED projectors lights like we have seen in Swift, Dzire, Ciaz, Ignis and S-Cross.

The headlights also get daytime running LEDs in the top spec model. Further, in terms of distinction, the front bumper has been revised housing a larger air dam while the fog lights now gets new enclosure and are closer to headlights. Turn to the side and the profile looks a bit unusual. The profile remains rounded, especially at the back and not as sharp as Volkswagen Polo and Hyundai i20. But this wouldn’t polarize opinions much. However, what the carmaker did right this time is giving new dual-toned 16-inch diamond cut alloy wheels replacing the old plain jane wheel caps. Move to the rear and you will find that there are no obvious changes in the new one. The hatch door appears to be small as compared to the big balloon-like bumper. The hatch features a huge contour that run one behind the other at the end of the taillights. The tail lights sports LED elements which does appear elegant. There is minimalistic badging which is a good thing. All you get is the Suzuki ‘S’ logo in the middle and ‘Baleno’ inscribed on the left. To add to the sportiness, there is a roof spoiler that also incorporates brake light.

From the rear you can’t differentiate between the petrol and diesel Baleno. You have to turn around to side and see a small symbol on the front passenger’s side fender to do that. The wing mirrors which are mounted on the door are body coloured and gets integrated turn indicators. Overall, the latest update retains the overall exterior design.

The new Baleno gets subtle changes inside. The carmaker has replaced the earlier black colour scheme with the new blue and black combination which does add a dash of sportiness to the car. Further, to make this car look upmarket, Maruti has chosen to give chrome inserts around the ac vents as well as on the centre console. The most prominent change comes in the form of updated infotainment system. The 7-inch touchscreen unit is the same SmartPlay Studio which is seen in new Wagon R. The infotainment retains the support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay along with new navigational setup which shows live traffic and warning for speed limit. This unit has been sourced from Harman instead of Bosch and the user interface is also chic and slick to use.

The instrument cluster is the same 4.2 inch colour TFT multi information display in the middle. The white fonts with blue circles look cool. The MID shows information such as real-time and average fuel consumption, time, outside temperature and distance to empty counter. The instrument cluster also shows the power and torque being used with clean animated graphics. Coming to the seating and space, the front seats offers excellent support with new black fabric with blue inserts. Here you will find decent storage space with nice quality of materials. The doors get adequate sized storage pockets for holding 1L of water bottle. The car is quite spacious with 5 adult can occupy the seats comfortably as there is ample headroom and legroom. However, the only con here is the absence of rear ac vents centre armrest which Maruti should have included in the face lifted version.

But the good thing is that automatic climate control is now available right from the Delta variant.The boot space is sufficient with 319L of luggage storage which can be further extended by flipping the rear seats in 60:40 ratio. Overall, the carmaker has given decent updates this time around but misses out on some of the prominent features.

The Maruti Suzuki Baleno came across as stable, smooth and very well packaged. You get a good sense from the car’s build quality – which isn’t always true of Maruti’s is it? The downside was that even though the CVT was smooth, overtaking or accelerating had the engine always at maximum revs. This meant too much noise, and too little punch. The 1.2 petrol though comes across as refined and agile. I think the CVT will take some getting used to – like all CVTs do. The unfortunate thing though? The CVT is only being offered in the Delta trim – which is one up from the base Sigma trim. A lot of buyers who opt for automatic gears these days are not simply looking for the convenience of that choice, but also want to pamper themselves a bit. I totally get Maruti wants to offer an attractively priced CVT, but should consider an Alpha (top trim) or Zeta (second trim) CVT variant as well. The CVT was a boon in Jaipur’s maddening street traffic, but yes on the highway is where it falters, as it lacks the punch to deliver an all-round sporty package. Maruti does claim 21.4Km/l mileage on both the CVT and the manual petrol – which is a nice number to throw around.

But if the petrol was fun to drive, the diesel is an absolute hoot. I was reminded of what a revelation the Swift diesel had been when it first arrived. I will never forget that first drive, and even though the Maruti Suzuki Baleno isn’t quite as sporty, it gets close. And the surprise element is that this is pretty much the same engine too! Maruti could’ve opted for the 90 bhp version of the 1.3 engine, but has stayed with the 74 bhp version (possibly for the higher mileage number – a superb 27.39Km/l!). But I didn’t think that was showing up as a big gap in the strategy at all. The diesel has a slightly more planted feel, and really seems to invigorate the car’s every pore. The Maruti Suzuki Baleno DDiS is super fun by comparison, and does everything you want it to. I must mention that the steering and suspension have been given a lot of consideration, and it shows (true across variants).

The suspension of the Baleno has been tweaked from the perspective of a city wanderer. The vehicle absorbs potholes and little rough roads quite easily. Though the higher wheelbase of the car makes it slightly less agile but the positive side is that you get a huge cabin space. In spite of that, the handling of really predictable.

Another plus point is the steering wheel which behaves light at low speeds and quite weighted at higher speeds. And this is superior to that of Honda Jazz and Elite i20 as there steering response is less weighted at higher speeds. The Baleno underpins all-new platform which is stronger by 10 percent and at the same time lighter that gives it a fundamental advantage in terms of performance. But it isn’t as tight and fun-to-drive as sibling Swift, yet the dynamics are well sorted without any nasty surprises. Throw the car at corners and it will manage the intended line. So the ride and handling is spot on for the urban driving setup and good for occasional highway trips.
