Maruti Suzuki Ignis Hatchback First drive

Maruti Suzuki Ignis Overview

Suzuki unveiled the Ignis Crossover at the Tokyo Motor show and since then we knew that Maruti definitely will bring it to the Indian market. And after almost a year we were assured by the Maruti officials that they certainly will be introducing the new Ignis in India.

Now coming to the iconic Japanese auto maker Suzuki, they have been known for their small cars across the globe while their recent plans also are to launch almost 20 global car models. Maruti have already launched the Baleno hatchback which is the production variant of the IK-2 Concept and this is actually a global product which mens better build quality, improved interiors and impressive safety features feature for the passengers inside. Let’s not get into all those details and focus completely on the car which was launched today on 13th January 2017 at a gala event where Swedish DJ, Axwell performed live. To all our surprise Maruti has priced the Ignis compact Crossover quite aggressively which is actually a good thing. View offers on Maruti Cars from Maruti dealers in Hyderabad at Autozhop.

The Ignis Crossover has derived from the IM-4 concept; the car was already previewed at the 2016 Auto expo and was unveiled at the 2015 Tokyo Motor show. The Ignis Crossover is positioned below the Vitara Brezza hatchback and will compete with some other B-Segment hatchback & Crossovers like the Mahindra KUV100, Hyundai Grand i10, Ford Figo etc.

Maruti Suzuki Ignis Exterior

To give you an idea of how the Ignis measures up, it is 150mm shorter on length than the Swift, is almost as wide and has a similar wheelbase too. While the ground clearance is 10mm more than the Swift, it also boasts of being 125kg lighter. While the Ignis is 65mm taller than the Swift, it is 25mm shorter than the Ritz. This five-seater compact tall-boy hatch looks funky with its chrome outlined wraparound LED headlamps, coloured roof-top, and its compressed bonnet.

The profile of the car highlights the use of 15-inch black alloys, flared wheel arches, a blacked out A-pillar, aggressively angled quarter-glass, and the old-school grilles on the C-pillar to get the unique design traits across. At the rear, the curved, edgy boot lid design and the blacked-out bumper section catches your attention. There’s no doubt that the Ignis stands out from a crowd.

Maruti Suzuki Ignis Interior

The distinct nature of the Ignis continues on the inside as well. The interiors look fresh and are not inspired with its current siblings in the lineup. The dual-tone dashboard with flat design looks very European and minimalistic. The 3-spoke steering wheel is all-new with integrated audio and Bluetooth controls, it feels good to hold. Behind the steering is a new instrument cluster which is easy to read and looks modern with neat dials and a sizeable multi-information TFT screen displaying outside temperature, time, average and instantaneous fuel efficiency, drive range, doors open/close status, trip metres, ODO metre, etc.

The infotainment system consists of a jutting out tab-like touchscreen unit that adds to the aesthetics of the interior. The user interface is the same as the other Maruti cars and it comes with a range of connectivity options including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There is an integrated Navigation system and the screen also doubles up as a display for the rear parking camera. Audio quality is very good and connecting via Bluetooth is an easy task. However, the tab-like screen only comes with the range topping Alpha variant. You won’t get this display with the AMT’s top variant (Zeta) that comes with a regular audio system with Bluetooth connectivity and a small screen. You also don’t get auto climate control in the Zeta variant.

Another distinct touch in the centre console are the cockpit style toggle switches for the AC settings, very sleek. The switches feel tactile and the overall build quality, fit and finish is good. There are a lot of storage spaces in the cabin. All doors get bottle holders including rear that have half litre bottle storage. The driving position is good, outward visibility is great and confidence inspiring while the ergonomics are spot on. For Maruti Suzuki Ignis visit

The cabin feels roomier than the Swift since it has a flat dashboard that scoops out some space up front. The rear passengers get adequate legroom while head room is excellent even for the tall passengers since it has a tallboy design. The under-thigh support is lacking though for tall passengers and three adults at the rear is a tight fit. The boot space at 260-litres is much more spacious than the Maruti Swift. Some of the other features include keyless entry with push button start, reverse parking sensors with camera, power folding ORVMs, projector headlights with LED DRLs, etc.

Maruti Suzuki Ignis Performance

Talking about drivetrain the Indian spec Maruti Ignis gets shares the same petrol powertrain with the Swift and Baleno hatchback. The 1.2 Litre VVIT petrol unit is capable of producing about 61 KW of peak power and 113 Nm of torque at 4200 rpm. The engine is paired to a 5 speed manual transmission and also gets an AMT transmission as optional which sends power to the front wheels. The diesel variant on the other hand gets the 1.3 Litre DDis diesel unit which is capable of producing about 55.2 KW of peak power at 4, 000 rpm and 190 NM of torque at 2,000 rpm. Surprisingly the diesel variant too gets both 5 speed manual transmission as standard while the AMT transmission is available as an option.

If we talk about fuel efficiency then Maruti claims that the 1.2 Litre petrol motor promises around 20.89 Km to a litre while the diesel variant on the other hand promises 26.80 km to a litre.

Coming to performance factor there is no doubt in the fact that the Ignis Crossover underpins a completely new platform which is lightweight and rigid and more stable. This has helped reduce the overall weight of the vehicle which in return will help the Ignis Crossover to provide a zippy yet comfortable ride. As far as the suspension setup is concerned the Crossover rides on McPherson Strut setup at the front and Torsion Beam setup towards the rear.

Maruti Suzuki Ignis Rideing

Let’s talk about the ride and handling now. With the sporty looks of the Ignis, we expected it to drive the same way. However, this car weighs just 825kg. So, along with the bigger wheels and stiffer suspension setup, it translated into a low speed ride that’s quite choppy. Even on smooth roads there’s a fair bit of up and down movement. It only gets slightly better as speeds increase but the car never feels settled. Maruti could have made the ride more pliant to aid the character of the Ignis. Also, one will hear the suspension working at road imperfections that you won’t even feel within the cabin.

Furthermore, the steering felt vague around the dead centre with a few turns from lock to lock. An indication of the arm work needed when a U-turn is required in tight situations. However, the tight 9.4m turning circle provides some relief. We mostly had straight roads on our drive and weren’t able to judge the handling, but there’s decent grip from the tyres which also aids braking characteristics. The high ground clearance is a boon when you have to dodge rocks on those unplanned sections of non-tarmac road.

Maruti Suzuki Ignis Safety

Maruti Suzuki has taken a step forward in terms of safety. The carmaker is offering ABS, EBD and dual front airbags as standard across all the trims of the Ignis. The Ignis is being retailed through the premium network of NEXA dealership which is rapidly growing across the country. The after sales service of Maruti is known to be the best in the business with low cost of maintenance and the same is expected with the new Maruti Ignis.

The Maruti Ignis surely will leave a huge impact in the Indian market because this will also be Maruti’s first big step in this new segment. The Crossover is priced aggressively and also provides plenty of new and premium stuffs that have never ever seen before in a Maruti car. While under the hood the Crossover still is powered by the renowned 1.2 Litre K series petrol and the 1.3 Litre diesel motor which are also used in number of their other cars.
