Mahindra, the leading utility vehicles maker of India, recently entered the lucrative compact sedan segment with Verito Vibe. Mahindra Verito Vibe Exterior
The first impression that you will get from the new compact car from Mahindra is that it is the exact Verito with few minor tweaks at the front but when you will walk towards the rear of the car there you will find the real change. So let’s start with the front of the car the new Verito Vibe has the same boxy design at the front but the new grille has given some uniqueness to the front, it now looks more sportier than before, the headlamp clusters also gets a little smoky appearance which once again looks new on the old Verito’s front. The front lower bumper also gets little plastic elements to it which again is a welcome change to the front facial of the car.
Now coming to the side profile of the car things start to get a little different here, the Verito Vibe gets a new 14 inch stylish set of wheels which is painted in Champagne color, some of you might dislike the color but Mahindra thinks differently, the side profile of the car also has a bold line which runs all the way to the rear of the compact car, the most significant changes that you will find in the car starts from its C pillars. The first thing that will catch your eye are the huge tail lamps which runs parallel with the rear windscreen, the top of the tail lamps has a little roof rails which once again gives it the sporty look and you will find a little bulging area just under the rear tail lamps (it cannot be called a rear spoiler exactly) just below that area is where you will find the rear boot door, the interesting fact about the rear boot of the Mahindra Verito Vibe is that you don’t have access to the boot from inside the cabin like you do on a hatch rather you will have to step outside the car and access the boot just like any other saloon.

Mahindra Verito Vibe Interior
The Verito Vibe shares its interior components with the Verito sedan sibling. The interiors have been designed with a very basic theme. It is not aesthetics but functionality where the Vibe scores tremendously.Even the top of the line variant gets plush fabric stitched seats. These seats lack comfortable cushioning and also could do with some better lumbar support along with height adjustment option. One place where the Verito Vibe scores heavily is the cabin space. This one boasts of the best in class cabin space. Not just on paper, the Verito Vibe is indeed a very wide car.
The front row space is grand and it does not get any more spacious than this. In fact, this area will put other hatches and sedans to shame. The headroom is simply fantastic. Even the knee room recess for the driver is plenty. The rear passengers too are not disappointed with generous breathing area in the rear section. Unlike in other cars, where the rear passengers can sit comfortably only by putting the front row passengers under certain discomfort, the Vibe’s rear occupants will never crib about space.
Mahindras have very smartly reduced the dimensions of Verito. Even though this is a sub 4 metre car, the boot has not been rammed in considerably. The cabin remains as spacious as it was previously and the undercut in length does not disturb the arrangement. Even the tall passengers will be very comfortable in the rear section.
The dashboard is simple and basic. The instrument cluster displays essential information like tripmeter, Average fuel Consumption, Average Speed and Distance to empty fuel tank. The central panel will remind you that it’s a Mahindra with a tall architecture and lower placed buttons. The D6 variant gets a 2 DIN music system with USB connectivity. Music output quality is average. After a certain decibel, the speakers seem to crack at low bass which makes it feel like an aftermarket fitment.The central panel also gets a glossy vinyl surround to it giving a fake carbon fibre feel. There are multiple storage options inside the cabin. There is front parcel shelf on the front dashboard with chrome accent. On the central carpet area, there lies provision for two cups or a litre class bottle. Even though the door has provisions for storage, inserting a bottle is not very comforting. This one also gets a 330 L boot space. It may sound wow but then the weird opening eats up the comfort space as loading luggage would not be very pleasing especially heavier suitcases.
The Vibe won’t score much on in-cabin features and appeal. It also has its own quirky elements. The placement of buttons is not very ergonomic for example the central locking button is located on the right side of the steering wheel instead of the one normally sighted on the door. The plastic quality looks weak.But then the cabin space makes up for all the lows of the interior. Getting in and out is a task especially for someone like me. Modern day hatches and sedans totally ignore the comforting element. In the Verito Vibe, I did have even the slightest of issues getting in and moving out. I was at my happiest best inside the cabin with so much room.
Mahindra Verito Vibe Performance
As the Mahindra Verito Vibe is a sub 4-metre vehicle and Mahindra doesn’t have a small capacity petrol engine in its portfolio, the company has offered the car with only a diesel engine. This oil burner needs absolutely no introduction as its popularity is only second to the Fiat Multijet engine. The 1.5-litre dCi diesel engine is a Renault unit and is a complete gem, producing a modest 65 PS of power and 160 Nm of torque. Performance in city conditions is simply excellent and the Verito Vibe has almost negligible turbolag, offering fantastic drivability.
The k9k diesel engine responds instantly to throttle inputs and pulls in a linear fashion right from the word go. Even in-gear acceleration is pretty good and you can simply potter around in high gears at low speeds. It’s only on the highways does this motor start to loose steam but there is good enough performance to keep you going comfortably till around 110 km/hr. Redline comes in at 5100 RPM and its post 3500 RPM when the power starts to trail off sharply. The clutch is feather light and the gearbox offers clean shifts with short throws. The Verito Vibe is extremely frugal and one can expect 16-17 km/l in city conditions.
Mahindra Verito Vibe Driving
The Verito Vibe uses the same underpinnings as the Verito and the driving experience can’t match most cars in the segment or price range. The steering is too big and feels quite heavy at parking speeds. However it just doesn’t weigh up at high speeds and there is some body roll too. Driving enthusiastically will make you do too many counter corrections to keep the Verito vibe in a lane, it simply doesn’t offer feedback although the vehicle remains stable at speed and NVH levels are very good.
However where the Mahindra Verito Vibe simply excels is the way it rides. The suspension has been set up to gobble the worst of roads in its stride. The car simply glides on tarmac and the ride quality is excellent even at the rear. Braking performance is good too although pedal bite could be slightly improved. The driving position could have been better as the controls don’t easily fall in the hands of the driver and one really needs to stop to operate the audio system as there are no steering mounted controls.

A part of the excellent driving experience offered by Mahindra Verito Vibe can be contributed to its sound braking system that does its job perfectly. While the front portion of the car is equipped with disc brakes the rear portion braking is supported by drum brakes. Apart from these, the braking system of the car gets aided by advanced systems like Anti-lock Braking System and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) system that help maintaining control over the car during sudden braking and fast deceleration of car whenever required. The Mahindra Verito Vibe does not score In terms of looks. It is the most boxy hatchback you will see in recent times but then the Vibe scores more on the utility front. The cabin space is grand which is not there in many hatchbacks sold. Its generous headroom and legroom balance the lows of styling and premium interiors.
In addition to space, it also has two mores strong points namely its diesel engine which is very smooth commuter and goes in a balanced way without any sudden drop or rise.
